Ashley

Hey Loves! I’m Ashley but since we’re in the beginning stages of becoming great friends, you can call me “Ash”. I'm an 80’s baby, Essex County, New Jersey native and I’m the youngest of all my biological siblings but the oldest of the ‘Loving Our Look’ trio. I have a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ramapo College and in process of returning to school for my Master’s. As far as my natural hair, I transitioned for almost a year to jump start my journey and clipped the ends after that. Now on to the meat and potatoes.

If you ask me I would say I live a pretty regular life. By day I work full time as the program manager in the social services field working with all types of people from those with disabilities, those in housing programs looking to become self-sufficient and also those who are in the welfare system. By night, I am a full time mother to a THREENAGER lol. This basically means that she is a 4 year old that behaves like a teenager, not in the sense that she behaves “grown” but she indeed has an old soul, like she’s “been here before”. So of course, you can rightfully guess Miss Aria Lei’lani is a mini naturalista like mommy! So much so that when she’s either pretending to do my hair or her dolls and she’s gathering her tools, she says “Ok, I have my spray bottle, oil and hair bows!” LOL. Gotta love it, right?! Her dad also tries to get an appointment with her but most of the time, she’s too busy lol. My whole household is natural which helps me get my practice in either way.

This leads me to the first half of the “why” I decided to become a blogger and share my experiences with being natural. I want my daughter to grow up and love everything about her and that includes her hair. It’s easier for children to want their hair like the cartoon princess they watch or like a classmate whose hair may be long and silky all of which is fine but that’s not her reality. Yes, her hair will be firstly HEALTHY AND FLOURISHING and the texture will be different yet beautiful and I want her to be so confident in loving her look, that other kids will want hair like HERS.

The other half is that, NATURAL HAIR PRESENT REAL LIFE STRUGGLES lol. Youtube will have you thinking that you can conquer the world when you attempt a hairstyle, but honey, I have honestly had more fails after watching tutorials than successes and I want to use a platform like this and youtube to just “keep it real!” We as a unit don’t have it all together and that is okay. We don’t have all the answers about what works and what doesn’t and that’s okay too. We do however know that this is a learning process that we are all currently still learning and will always be learning and that’s okay too. So if you get nothing else from any of us, we do hope that you start to feel confident and reassured in knowing that you are not alone in this journey. We are right there with you, cheering you on and congratulating you on your win! The natural hair movement is not only about “hair” it’s about being confident enough to walk in the image of who God created you to be! Once you can do that, literally nothing can stand in your way; not even that wash and go that you let air dry all day only for it to look like a mushroom in the morning when you have somewhere to be LOL.

As a whole you will see a variety of content, from beauty all the way to DIY’s. So go forth, be great and let’s flourish and nourish this hair and our lives together!

Xoxo,

Ashley
